How To Install Ecobee Thermostat With Power Extender Kit?

ecobee power extender kit

Latest Ecobee thermostats always come with an additional thing i.e. a power extender kit. This might be a new thing to hear about especially if you have been using older version of Ecobee thermostat. One important thing to note is that this power extender kit is free of cost, it means you don’t have to pay extra money to buy it.

POWER EXTENDER KIT ECOBEE – WHAT IS THIS?

Before getting to the installation part, it is important to know what exactly PEK (Power Extender Kit) is. Ecobee power extender kit is basically an alternative to use if your thermostat doesn’t have a C-wire. The purpose of using PEK and C-wire is the same i.e. they both provide continuous AC voltage to your Ecobee thermostat.

But there might be a situation where you don’t have a C-wire installed in your thermostat. However, if you want to install Ecobee thermostat without a C-wire then you will either have to use a C-wire adapter or power extender kit. Absence of C-wire might cause your thermostat to go all blank in no time. Another important thing to know about is that it isn’t always essential to use PEK, we will discuss about this later in this article.

INSTALL ECOBEE POWER EXTENDER KIT:

Ecobee power extender kit installation process includes the below mentioned steps.

STEPS TO FOLLOW:

STEP 1 – Make sure your HVAC system is turned OFF

STEP 2 – Now take off the cover from your furnace or HVAC system

STEP 3 – As soon as you witness the wiring, make sure to either draw the wiring diagram or take a picture of it to remember the connections

STEP 4 – You will see that 4 wires are going straight to your thermostat. Label those wires as Y, W, G and R

STEP 5 – Now make sure you have disconnected the labeled wires from the control board

STEP 6 – Take the PEK and look for the buttons present at the top of it

STEP 7 – Press that button and connect the wires accordingly

STEP 8 – After connecting the furnace wire, it is now time to connect PEK wires

STEP 9 – Hold 5 white wires of the kit and connect them into the control board’s terminals

While dealing with live wires, make sure to wear protective gloves and boots in order to avoid any unfortunate accident.

ECOBEE4 INSTALLATION WITH PEK:

Ecobee thermostat without C-wire will definitely require an Ecobee C-wire adapter or a power extender kit. Here we will be discussing how to install Ecobee4 thermostat with a power extender kit.

INSTALL ECOBEE4 thermostat

STEPS TO FOLLOW:

STEP 1 – Keep your HVAC system turned OFF

STEP 2 – Go to your thermostat and take a picture of the arrangement of wires

STEP 3 – Similarly, take a picture of the control board wiring

STEP 4 – Now look for the thermostat wires which are connected to the R, W, Y, G terminals on the furnace board. We will be using these 4 wires in our installation process

STEP 5 – Carefully remove the R, W, Y, G wires from their present location and connect them to the R, W, Y, G terminals on the power extender kit

STEP 6 – On your PEK you will see 5 wires (R, W, Y, G and C). Now connect these 5 wires to the R, W, Y, G and C terminals respectively of the furnace board

STEP 7 – Now after installing PEK successfully, close the panel and start working with your thermostat

STEP 8 – For Ecobee wiring, make sure you have the following connections

  • G wire should be connected to C terminal
  • R wire should be connected to RC terminal
  • Y wire should be connected to PEK terminal
  • W wire should be connected to W1 terminal

STEP 9 – Now turn ON the HVAC system and see whether your thermostat is working or not

ECOBEE3 LITE INSTALLATION WITH PEK:

ECOBEE POWER EXTENDER KIT REQUIREMENTS:

Ecobee common wire adapter and Ecobee PEK are two different thing. However, their purpose of usage is the same and both of them are used as an alternative of C-wire. There are some requirements which must be fulfilled in order to use PEK with your thermostat.

Power Extender Kit Requirements In ECOBEE Thermostat

REQUIREMENT 1:

There should be 4 wires present in your thermostat.

REQUIREMENT 2:

The wires should be:

G -> Green colored wire (used for fan purpose)
R, RC of RH -> Red colored wire (used for providing 24V power)
W -> White colored wire (used for heating purpose)
Y or Y1 -> Yellow colored wire (used for air conditioning purpose)

If the thermostat has 2 wires then I am afraid that you cannot use Ecobee power extender kit.

CLOSING WORDS:

If you are new and don’t have basic knowledge about the thermostat issues then I would recommend you to read my previous articles as well. However, in this case after reading the above mentioned information you will be able to grab all the relevant knowledge regarding the Ecobee PEK.
