Ecobee Thermostat Not Cooling: Troubleshooting Guide – 2024

I have been loving my interaction with Ecobee thermostat since the day I bought it. Its smart features and everything are just wow! But it gave me a mini-heart attack when it stopped cooling for some reason.

Yes, you heard it right! I witnessed Ecobee thermostat not cooling with my own eyes when I made some changes in the temperature but nothing happened. What to do next? I couldn’t afford this issue especially when the temperature was too hot to handle.

I looked up for all the possible solutions for this issue and found some of them very helpful as they fixed this problem of my thermostat.

ECOBEE AIR CONDITIONER NOT COOLING – WHAT TO DO?

1. CHECKING THE POWER SUPPLY:

If your thermostat has a C-wire present to do the job then it must be receiving power from a source. Check the power supply of source that whether sufficient power is being provided to the C-wire or not. If the answer is no then it is time to replace the transformer. In case you have installed a C-wire adapter then look into it to find possible errors associated with it.

2. CHECKING THE FUSE:

With every HVAC system, there comes a fuse. Even when you are checking the breaker box make sure you have insulated gloves and boots on just to be on the safe side. A blown fuse will usually have a black body and the only solution for this is to replace the faulty fuse with a new one. Just take out the old fuse and insert a new one.

3. INSPECTING SYSTEM SETTING:

Ecobee temperature not changing could be due to the fact that your thermostat isn’t in the right mode. If you want your thermostat to provide cool air then make sure it is actually in cool mode. To confirm this, you can either use the home app or look directly into the thermostat screen. If it is not set to cool mode then you will have to do this manually. Drain pipes of your thermostat is responsible for taking the moisture out of your system by draining it near the outdoor unit. To clean the drain pipes, detach the pipe from the system, run a distilled vinegar solution through the entire length of the pipe and attach the pipe again.

7. CHECKING THE FLOAT SWITCH:

When the water accumulation exceeds the specific limit then the float switch trips off to save the entire system from damage. This tripping occurs due to the clogged drain pipes so make sure they aren’t clogged at all. To find the float switch, go to the furnace or air handler’s control board. Follow the wire that is connected to the R terminal and you will be able to find the switch.

8. EXAMINING THE COOLANT LEAKS:

Ecobee not working properly could be due to the coolant leaks. What is exactly coolant? Well, it is a fluid like substance that is present in your HVAC system. The job of this fluid is to take away the necessary heat from the room and escort it outside. As a result, the room will become cooler than before. So the leaks in the coolant system might be concerning for you.

To confirm this leakage problem, the first thing that you need to do is take the coolant pipe and find joints in it. Now take some soapy water and run it around the joint, wait for some time. If you suspect bubbles in the water then it is a confirm fact that there has been coolant leaks. To fix this issue, call in some professional help to get the job done.

9. INSPECTING THE AC COILS:

The AC coils of your thermostat are delicate to handle as they are made of copper. If they are exposed to the element then corrosion could happen. But keeping them clean is also important for the proper working of the AC unit. I recommend you to use professional help from outside as it is a really demanding job to get done.

10. EXAMINING THE EQUIPMENT CONFIGURATION:

To check the configuration, you will have to follow the below mentioned steps.

STEPS TO FOLLOW:

STEP 1 – From the main menu, visit the “Settings” option and then navigate towards “Installation Settings”

STEP 2 – From there choose “Equipment” option and then “Wiring”

STEP 3 – Check and make sure both RC and RH are connected. If one of them is not connected then you will have to reconfigure

HOW TO RECONFIGURE?

To reconfigure the equipment you will have to follow the below mentioned steps.

STEPS TO FOLLOW:

STEP 1 – Select “Installation Settings” option and then navigate towards “Equipment” page

STEP 2 – Select “Reconfigure Equipment”

STEP 3 – You will be asked for the R wire connection; if only one is connected then select “Yes, only RC is connected” otherwise select “No, RC and RH are connected”

STEP 4 – If only RC is connected then select “Modify” option

STEP 5 – You will have to manually select the Y1 terminal and adjust the wiring

STEP 6 – Once done, press “Next”

STEP 7 – At the end, you will see Y1 terminal being selected under the equipment screen in the wiring section

11. CHECKING THE TEMPERATURE THRESHOLD SETTING:

Problems with Ecobee thermostats might have a connection with the temperature threshold settings of your thermostat. You will have to ensure that the Compressor minimum outdoor temperature is below the average temperature because it will stop working if the outside temperature falls below the set value. Also make sure that the compressor minimum cycle off time is 300 seconds.

The last trick which could do wonders is resetting your thermostat to remove all the current settings which might be causing the errors. Once you have reset your thermostat then you will have to configure everything again.

STEP 2 – Select the “Settings” option and then “Reset”
